Description
On September 19, 1966, the defendant, George M. La Fernier, was tried on three counts of incest before a court and jury. In June, 1966, the defendant was living in Port Washington, Wisconsin, with his second wife, their daughter and a child of his wifes first marriage. From 1948 to 1960, the defendant had been married to one Helen Hames. There were five children born of that marriage; and they lived with their mother and stepfather in Hamlin, Texas. Early in June, the defendant arrived in Hamlin, Texas, and drove the five children to Port Washington for a visit. The offenses occurred on June 16, June 18, and June 24 of 1966, with the oldest of the five children, Lora, aged fifteen. On the day after the first offense and on several occasions thereafter, Lora tried to reach her mother by telephone; but Mrs. Hames and her husband were away from home beginning on June 17th. Her mother was finally reached on June 29th, whereupon Lora told her what happened. Her stepfather then telephoned the Port Washington police.
